I previously had the experience of posting a thesis during a postal strike in South Africa -- thereby missing a deadline, as the postal services took my thesis but didn't inform me of the strike. Today the postal services informed me of a strike: we were four weeks into a strike, they said -- and supposing that it ended now, the post would probably take two weeks to clear. But they offered me an economical alternative through the Deutsche Post -- which I used. OBSERVATION: South Africa is full of workarounds.

And there is apparently also a postal strike in the UK. But even Google can't get reliable information on whether a strike is still on or whether it has ended. Postnet can sometimes help.
I thanked them for informing me. When my thesis got stuck in a "secret" strike, that wasn't funny.
