‘No’ In Xhosa

In English, it is usually a fairly simple matter to say no. "No" is the word, and there aren't really synonyms for it. Maybe "Negative," or "Never," or such. But in my wife's culture, there are many ways of saying no. An emphatic "No" in Xhosa may sound like this: "Yooh! Hayi-ke! E-e! Tshini! Aikona!" In some cases, "No" is not so much a word as a performance. A no may continue, too, for as long as a person feels so inclined.
