In my early 30's, I was elected national Chairman of the Evangelical Congregational Churches of South(ern) Africa. During my term of office, although we were not a big fish in the pond, I sought above all to forge closer ties with and between various Congregational groupings in Southern Africa. It could have worked -- a window opened, hearts opened -- however key people didn't seize the moment, and the moment passed. OBSERVATION: I was surprised to find that none of the Congregational groupings knew about all of the others, or even half of the others. Those who left a special impression on me, for their desire for broader unity, was the Independent Congregational Churches on the Cape Flats.
