When War Breaks Out

An old woman, surely of Khoi descent, visited my parents-in-law’s home. She was startled to see me there. Wife E introduced me as her husband. The old woman said: “He’s a Boer!” E said: “No Granny, he’s not a Boer.” She said aggressively: “He’s a Boer! What will you do when war breaks out? Will he fight for the Boers or for you?” “We’ll be together,” said E. The old woman smiled.
