This is a niece on my side of the family, taken with a Sony Mavica, an early digital still camera. It was the MVC-FD7, the first Sony digital still camera with a zoom lens. It sported "sharp 640 x 480 pixel VGA resolution" -- which is about one-hundred times less than that of modern cameras. Looking at this photo, though, it really was quite sharp, and its original quality is completely preserved in digital form. OBSERVATION: A small digital phone now outperforms this old Mavica. Its full specifications are here. My niece, in the meantime, has also advanced. Among other things, she won Gold at the New York Film Festival (as one of a small team).
