Bread Crusts And Culture

Here is a tale that reveals the size of some simple cultural differences. A lay minister from a poorer part of town came to see me with a question: “Some Americans started a feeding scheme for children at our Church. But they ordered that the children should not eat bread crusts. It’s the most prized part of the loaf! Why won’t they let the children eat the best?” I said: “I think they regard the crusts as off-cuts. They think that the children should only have the best.”
