Vygies Save The House

This is my parents-in-law's "lawn", outside their house -- succulent ground cover with edible fruit. It is called "vygies" locally -- "little figs" -- officially Mesembryanthemaceae. Recently there was a near disaster as a veld fire leapt over the vygies and set the house's front fascia board on fire. My father-in-law said: "The vygies saved the house." Without them, it may have been hopeless. OBSERVATION: Vygies are often used to dry washing, too, since they keep it up off the ground.
