When I started in ministry, we were about 35 years out of World War II. There were many veterans around -- and the wives and widows of veterans. By now, today, veterans are relatively few. Something that troubled spouses -- it was quite big in counselling -- was the silence that came over their husbands after the war. They would not speak about it -- and more generally became quiet. Some wives and widows asked me why. I still do not really know why. My guess would be their grief over what happened, or shock over what they did.
