‘If God Spares Me ...’

It is quite common that one visits someone who is gravely ill, and they say something like this: "If God spares me, I shall serve Him always in this or that way." Mostly, I think, they don't get the chance -- it is too late. But about ten years ago, I visited a woman in hospital who was at death's door. She made such a statement. I met her again last month. She had transformed from a domestic worker into a presence on the international stage. She has been featured in TIME magazine, too. OBSERVATION: She described to me her condition then, and her determined struggle just to get on her feet again and walk. Today, one would not notice any problem. I suppose she would still be a domestic worker today, if she had not nearly died.
