There is a description of Americans (which is, citizens of the USA) which one hears often in our Afrikaans communities here:
bitter onbeskof. One hears this so often that it would seem to be about synonymous with the term "American". I tell people that Americans are in fact gentle, generous people, albeit a little politicised, and materially overloaded.
Onbeskof means literally, "insolent" (perhaps in the context, "rude"), while
bitter means "grievously".
OBSERVATION: It surely has much to do with Hollywood.
