Some ministers are fearful for their reputations. In keeping with this, they play it (very) safe. As an example, I know a minister who will not meet anyone alone -- regardless of whether it is a man or a woman (a sign of the times). But in my MTh research, I turned up in the literature that this may do a minister no good. Jack Hayford and James Hunter in particular point this out in their books. An incident in my own ministry comes to mind, some 20 years ago. I went to see an elderly woman in our congregation, and pressed the buzzer. She said over an intercom that she wasn't able to see me. So I left. Then she told everyone the insulting things I had said to her in her home. I never saw the inside of her home. OBSERVATION: Ministry is a risk. It is always a risk, I think. You are putting yourself at risk by ministering to others. Be too concerned about it (although one should take reasonable care), and ministry may be seriously compromised.
