District Six

We emigrated to South Africa in 1969. My father told me: "I want to show you something. You may never see it again." He drove me through what was originally the "Sixth Municipal District" (District Six) of Cape Town, here depicted by Anthony Walton. In 1966, the government declared District Six a Whites-only area, and more than 60 000 people were removed. The houses were demolished. Much of District Six still lies bare today. Part of it is now the home of the thriving Cape Peninsula University of Technology, with over 30 000 students. I live close to District Six.
