One faces very challenging situations in ministry -- all the more so in urban ministry. It has been my habit to set time aside to assess such situations -- and at the same time to write it down. This is very helpful, and should be just as helpful for some of the everyday challenges people face. What may appear on such an "assessment" of mine: my general spiritual attitude to the situation, my life priorities, the big idea behind approaching it in a certain way, which people are central to it all, how alternative approaches compare, proactive steps, advice to myself, and so on. OBSERVATION: Part of the helpfulness lies in focusing one's thoughts over the long term, rather than spinning wheels by retracing considerations, or devoting too much time and energy to "shadows".
