The position of treasurer, in the Congregational Church, is traditionally the most humble position. At least, it requires the most humble person. Some Congregationalists feel very strongly about that. Among other things, the Church (which has the power) may or should take some Church-like decisions which do not make good sense outside of faith. A treasurer, on the other hand, may want to see things under control. But while he or she may be invited to portray scenarios as a service to the members, the treasurer should not steer the Church or even seemingly steer it. Ultimately it all rests on what the Congregational Church is, which is the will of God revealed through the whole Church, which one listens to attentively. OBSERVATION: To keep the balance, Churches may regularly elect or re-elect the treasurer. In one of my old Churches, every two years.
