Hushed Deceit

There is a disturbing trend in our society. One is no longer able to deal with deceit, in particular, in a normal way. Here’s one example among many. A company told me that they didn't have a certain document. A manager had double-checked. I asked permission to see what was in front of the manager, and there was the document. I said to (higher) management, please deal with your manager. But a great silence descended on the company. At this point, the only "gentlemanly" option left is to approach the ombudsman, which is a laborious process and more often than not leads nowhere. Whatever happened to a company which responds: “This is unacceptable, of course! Fetch the manager! Is this true? What do you think you are doing? This is a position of trust!”
