Working With Layers

I finally worked out how to do things with layers. It is too complicated, what one reads on the Internet. This is me, blowing out a candle on my birthday this week. The original shot is on the left. The one on the right uses two layers. To create the bottom layer:
• Open the image with a graphics program of choice
• Desaturate it, play with it, and invert it
• Save it and reopen it with (free) KolourPaint
To create the top layer:
• Open the image with (free) GIMP
• Click on Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers
• Change the opacity, and save it as a .png file
• Open it with Kolourpaint, and copy and paste it onto the bottom layer
• Adjust the image as desired
OBSERVATION: That's just to give a basic idea. Knowing this much, one might do all sorts of things.
