Helping Hard Working People

Verso last month published the book The New Poverty by Stephen Armstrong. What interests me is that two-thirds of those in poverty in the UK have work. I once noted on this blog that most of the people our Church helped with Christmas charity were "hard working members who are struggling to survive". In fact that may be true, too, of those we helped throughout the year. So it is interesting that our policy saw what this book sees -- although of course the book describes the situation in the UK. OBSERVATION: This, however, is of significance to charity in general. Our policy in general, as a Church, was to prevent people from "falling through the final safety net" as I put it. There comes a point where someone has fallen just too low to be able to recover. As a Church, we helped quite a few people not to "fall through the net".
