A Ministerial Tension

It is with mixed feelings that I receive the news of President Zuma's resignation, while so many people come down on one side or the other. To put it too simply, he was no good -- yet from the point of ministry, one is dealing with "hated" people all the time -- gangsters and fraudsters and perverts and so on -- and as a minister, one becomes habituated to look on such people with a mind to redeem them. If they are not redeemed, one is sorry about it, and sorry for them. It is a strange kind of a tension that ministers find themselves in. They preach high standards and aspirations, yet are friends to the despised.
