To put it too simply, there are just two ways of doing Church: by sight, or by faith. Many Churches plan for the future on the basis of their present reality (sight): present income, present congregation, present facilites, and so on. Some Churches plan for the future on the basis of what God shows them (faith): the spiritual and material needs which they could potentially meet -- beyond what they now see. The first way of going about things can, I think, be summarised in one word: selfishness. OBSERVATION: One needs to take into account the possible, of course. As an example, a Church under my ministry was not in a position to appoint a youth pastor. We would need to create a new reality, as it were. Members were challenged to do so -- and they did.
