Today being Pentecost, or Whitsun, a lot is said about the Holy Spirit in the creeds (which is formal statements of faith). Yet there is something I miss in many creeds -- including the ancient creeds. This is the application of salvation, and its relation to the Holy Spirit. For example, the ancient Nicene Creed: "Jesus Christ came down for us men and for our salvation," and: "We believe in the Holy Ghost". Yet the application is not there. Compare this with a common Congregational creed: "Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
is absolutely essential." OBSERVATION: Congregationalists, though, do not speak of creeds but of confessions. They are confessions of faith, not formal foundations -- primarily because the Scriptures are the foundation.
