Wedding Receptions: Europe And Africa

In my previous post, I refer to our wedding reception. In fact there were two -- a European reception and an African reception. Here is the biggest difference between the two: in European culture, a wedding reception is chiefly an occasion for celebration, while in African culture it is chiefly an occasion of mourning. We had opportunity to do both. OBSERVATION: What stood out for me most at the African reception was a tradition in which an elder symbolically threatens the bride with a stick, by which is meant: stay humble! You may be married now, but you are still a child. I did not know the tradition, and was quite surprised by it.
