How To Judge A Suitor

A deaconess, being attuned to the finer points of a man's appearance, once bought me shoe polish as a gift for Christmas. There was no explanation for the unusual gift, but it was clear that my shoes had not been polished. I proudly presented my newly polished shoes in my vestry. She said: “My mother taught me: if you have a suitor, look at his shoes, his fingernails, his hair, and look at how he handles a hymnbook.”
