I was speaking to someone this morning about whether it was possible for our African National Congress (ANC) to correct course after spectacular failure. The same question may be asked of the Church: is it possible for a failing Church to turn around? There is the idea that one merely needs to implement certain policies, certain interventions, and a Church will turn around. I don't think so. In the Church, it is not a matter of engineering. It is about who is carrying the Church forward, what their relationship is to the Lord, and whether the Holy Spirit is present. That is beyond all policies and interventions.
