A question which has troubled me in the past is what a (Congregational) minister is to do, if he or she is certain that someone is not suitable for office, on the basis of behind-the-scenes events, or private counselling -- yet the Church wants to elect such a person, and the person concerned wants to be elected. This has confronted me in both my major pastorates, and still seems to me an impossible conflict. Tell all, and you are being a character assassin -- if anyone would believe you anyway. Or ask people to take it on trust -- but they are usually reluctant to do so. Or remain silent, but you have a responsibility towards the Church. And certainly, ask God to intervene.
