Informal Social Control

South Africa abolished the death penalty many years ago -- yet has a nationwide system for removing offenders from society (putting them to death). People often speak of mobs -- but this is not chaotic -- it is organised -- and it is the same system nationwide. Figures are sketchy.  In 2017-2018, police had a figure of 846 "mob justice killings" -- which is thought to be a lower estimate. OBSERVATION: I keep a great variety of friends -- one of whom praised the informal system last week, with a video of a man being put to death. Two things struck me about the video: there was no mercy -- and what if they made a mistake? It was, needless to say, a traumatic video.
