Navigational Techniques

Yesterday, I blogged about a Central Pacific technique to determine a good time to travel by sea: watching for Serranidae inside the reef. I said that I knew of various navigational techniques. Here are the ones that I know:

• Watching for reflections in distant clouds

• Watching for distant mist

• Observing closer mists and clouds

• Watching for birds

• Observing the swell and the ripples on the ocean

• Consulting a frame which depicts the stars

• Observing the reflection of stars in a coconut cup

• Watching for the rising of stars

• Watching for luminescence in the water

OBSERVATION: I was lost at sea once, between Maiana and Tarawa, in the Central Pacific. We found land with the first method: watching for reflections in distant clouds. And now we use GPS. How we have been diminished.
