I was caught again, last week, by Xhosa humour (my wife is Xhosa). Xhosas will say things with a poker face -- then the joke is how people react. Such a joke may go on for days. At the Dept. of Home Affairs last week, an official told me that, as it was the Easter weekend, they would close the Department six hours early, so that they could all go enjoy themselves. As for the pestilential public seeking passports and ID's, they should "Get out! Just get out!" and he motioned with his hands as if shooing everybody out. When I asked him whether he, too, would leave six hours early, he smiled and said, "That was a joke."
