The mourners at funeral or memorial services have often asked me whether they should greet the congregation after the service as they leave, or at the reception afterwards. Usually that is their choice, as to what is comfortable for them. Yet while it may seem to be more comfortable to withdraw to a reception, personally I prefer the old-fashioned way of greeting the congregation after the service as they leave. For one thing, the mourners are then not then tied up in a huddle as often happens at a reception.
