My regular stays in the townships reveal the state of the nation. It is easy to see and perceive: the level of destruction, the condition of the people, the talk of the town ... On a recent visit, I was shocked by the sudden destruction -- everywhere poles out, windows smashed, rooves down. I was shocked by the condition of the people: malnutrition among adults, neighbours begging, and assault -- and the talk of the town was "children" (crime) and "laziness" (unemployment). On this visit, there is little new destruction, although damage has not in many cases been repaired. I have seen (so far) no malnourished adults, little violence, little begging -- and the conversation has changed. Many poor people have increased the security around their homes. OBSERVATION: The slide has stopped. Now one may hope it could be reversed.
