Elloughton Near Brough

My mother was born in Stettin -- Szczecin today. Therefore she was German (later British). Her English was flawless -- but not when she first visited England. She landed a job as an au pair in Elloughton near Brough -- and recounted the story with humour that, when she arrived in the area, she asked for directions to "Ellufton" near "Brow". It is "Ellerton" near "Bruff". OBSERVATION: She worked for a Dr. D.P. Brachi MBE and his family, and spoke of them with affection. In Elloughton, she met an Englishman whom she married -- a marriage that, a certain minister said, was "against the rules" at that time.
