I again heard a fiction today -- that the Church manse, in my city ministry, was sold to pay out the minister. This is not so. The Church had the money to pay out the minister without the sale of the manse -- I had an intimate knowledge of the finances. OBSERVATION: My departure merely created an opportunity. There had long been talk of "recapitalisation", which included the sale of the manse. I was not on the side of recapitalisation in its most radical forms. At the time, Church officers demanded that I sign a statement "endorsing the sale of the manse". I said that this would not be correct. In the Congregational Church, the Church itself endorses such things, in the Church meeting. I still await the payment of outstanding pension.
