Steam Engine Era

It seems hard to believe that I knew the steam engine era. Today, one recreates the "golden age of steam travel" on a few surviving lines which are "heritage railways". As a teen, I travelled through the Great Karoo with steam locomotives. What I remember in particular is little bits of coal raining down on the passenger carriages -- and it sounded like rain.
