I heard a powerful Afrikaans idiom for the first time last night: "Hulle sit die pot mis." They've put the pot in the wrong place (on the stove). It was in the context of Galatians 5:4 -- people in the Galatian Church thought not only that they should observe the law, but that they were justified in doing so, or redeemed in doing so. OBSERVATION: In my experience, there are subtle variations of this. One is that, because we are not justified by the law, we are unconditionally justified -- as if we were justified simply by hearing that message in the pew. It entered our ears, therefore it is ours.
