One way in which my perceptions have shifted over the years is that I now think it may not necessarily be a good thing for a Church to be self-congratulatory. In my ministry, I have encouraged hallelujahs and amens in Church services, and ripples of approval or applause, over good things. But this may hide the true spiritual status of a Church, and it is questionable anyway whether one should be self-congratulatory. OBSERVATION: I would now say, do it with care, and let it be about the Lord, not about us. In some cases, it may not merely "not be a good thing" to be self-congratulatory. It may be a danger sign.
