I was talking to a farm labourer on Christmas Eve. His wife was there, too. As a young man, he ssaid, he had been wild – uncontrollable – and thank the Lord for a wife who hadn’t abandoned him. Then he “met the Master”. He wasn’t tamed overnight, he said. It took a long time, he said, before he overcame his wandering and going stray, and he wasn’t a perfect cure just yet – but that had marked the turning point. OBSERVATION: There is too little emphasis today on that turning point. I myself had four major theological educations, yet only one clearly taught conversion: the (now) Staatsunabhänginge Theologische Hochschule.
