It is something which often comes up in conversation: isn't it problematic for me to be married to a wife whose cultural background is vastly different to mine? But I always say -- with the benefit, too, of my counselling experience -- you have the more awkward situation where cultures are closer -- even where they are nominally the same. With the gulf between wife E and me, it seems easy to identify where any problems lie, and so to negotiate them, or to help one another. This may not be the case where cultures are closer. People tend to be less aware then of the cultural divide. Just last week, someone told me how explosive was the mix of parents of different origins in Europe.
