The two publications for which I edit, although they are "serious" publications, deliberately edit out obscure words. Even so, we receive some impressive obscurities. Editing a piece this morning, I needed to look up "venality". That one I should have known -- but here are some more impressive ones that have passed before our editorial eyes: bloviation, adumbration, paradiastole -- and so on! OBSERVATION: These days, when writing for an international readership, such words are dead. It is a delight to use them where people understand them, but who still does? Incidentally, the word "bloviation" survived our editing -- because the author absolutely insisted.
