Amelia Earhart was an American aviator who was lost over the Pacific. It seems almost certain, as of this week, that she was lost in the (now) Kiribati Republic where I lived as a boy. In fact when I was in the islands, they came asking whether anyone had seen her fly over, although that was nearly thirty years later. What seems likely is that she made an emergency landing on an uninhabited island (Nikumaroro), radioed messages which were received but not understood, and died quite some time later. Her navigator may not have lived long. OBSERVATION: A local might have survived indefinitely, but conditions for an unskilled European are very harsh. For this reason we ourselves had servants who were familiar with island life. Nikumaroro is quite a size, but was uninhabited because it suffered periodic droughts.
