In city ministry, when I started, Church pews were packed from the front to the back of the Church, such that even pall-bearers could not walk beside a coffin -- it needed to be squeezed through. The members then decided to create this space (pictured), which we called the "Fellowship Area". There were a few big advantages here. People could sneak in and look around before they took a seat. There was a place for greeting one another, following funerals for example. One could do things here, such as distribute Bibles. Once or twice, the press assembled here. And more. There was a maroon curtain between the Fellowship Area and the "Church proper", which one sees in this photo.
