Advent is approaching, with 2 December marking the Christian New Year. The meaning of Advent, through the centuries, has considerably shifted, and with this in mind, I have included the older message of Advent in my later ministry -- which is penitence, the conviction of sin. This had far greater
prominence during Advent in times past. In 567 AD, for example, the Church declared Advent an official Season of Penitence. This has to do both to the first and to the second Advent of Christ: God sent His Son to save His people from
their sins, yet He will come again in power and glory to judge the
world -- and just as His first advent required the preaching of John (repentance), so with His second advent. OBSERVATION: This emphasis has been lost during the past hundred years or so.
