Accusations How-To

Last week, on a South African soap opera, a village mayor was falsely accused, by persons outside (not inside) his structures. Someone asked me: "What would you do? First, there are biblical guidelines -- one may simply "Google" them. The apostle Paul responded to accusation: "My manner of life you know." And there is the wider perspective: "A diseased tree cannot bear good fruit." That is, judge this by your personal experience. In general, beyond this, the natural reaction is one of self-defence. But I think one is well advised to react the opposite way. The accusation against the soap opera mayor was criminal. I would have told my accusers therefore to report the accusation. If not, why not? I would, too, have reported it myself, on two levels -- within my own structures, with all the information at my disposal -- and to the relevant authorities. OBSERVATION: I have in fact been in situations like this, and this is what I have done -- abbreviated here. The mayor, incidentally, made things more difficult for himself than he needed to -- as would happen on a soap opera.
