There are two simple questions one asks as an editor, when assessing a text: "Is it representative?" and "Is it balanced?" Yet everywhere one looks in the media -- news broadcasts, soap operas, interviews -- one has to say: "No, absolutely not. It is not representative. It is not balanced." This is so even of organisations which are thought to be the gold standard. Particularly bad is the BBC. It is obvious that they fall far short. OBSERVATION: Of course, for certain purposes, one may deliberately be unrepresentative or unbalanced, though not as a rule. In the Church, I think, one should be all the more disposed to being both representative and balanced.
