My Sunday services have always started with a “Call to Worship”, which is a text which, well ... calls people to worship God. By way of contrast, some years ago I attended a Church where a minister introduced a service with these words: “We are about community here.” That occurred to me as being so beside the point that it stands as a kind of monument for me. In some form or other, on most Sundays, I have begun with words which express: “We are about the exalted Christ here.” However, the exalted Christ is the basis of community -- all the more so in a diverse Church.
