Representative Rosters

Many Churches run on rosters: a roster for welcoming churchgoers, a roster for giving notices in Church, a roster for morning prayers, a roster for creche duty, and so on. Throughout my ministr(ies), I have sought to make such rosters representative. But here there is a problem, particularly in city ministry. Many people are easy to contact, many almost impossible. The reasons for this may include shift work, restrictions on the use of telephones at work, telephones or postal services unavailable, and so on. The temptation then is to do what works easiest -- contact the persons who are easiest to put on a roster. However, if one does that, the rosters become very one-sided. OBSERVATION: The purpose is not to do what works easiest, but to have inclusive rosters on which the whole Church is represented. I have therefore encouraged office secretaries to keep trying, keep trying, month after month, and to think of stand-bys for rosters just in case. That has been a challenge in ministry, to be equitable always.
