Steeling Oneself

My late wife Mirjam once asked me how I coped with the trauma that I saw in ministry. Some ministers see little of it, some a lot. I saw quite a lot. In my early ministry, I was traumatised by what I saw. Later in ministry, I steeled myself for situations, so that I could handle each one being "self-possessed". And I generally took a few hours off afterwards to revive. OBSERVATION: Steeling oneself does not mean that one is less affected by the situation -- just better able to be in command. In later ministry, I came to love such situations -- because I could help and minister.
