Hard Urbanites

Ministry in urban areas may be an order of magnitude more difficult than suburban or rural ministry. One reason for this is the people. Often they are harder. An actuary asked me (he had the same experience): “Why do you think this is?” I said: “So many people are isolated, dislocated. They don’t have families and dogs and cabbage patches to occupy them.” I would add a few things. Urbanites -- wealthier urbanites -- may be used to having things their way. Urbanites may need to be harder to survive. And so on. OBSERVATION: But this need not only work against urban ministry. Apart from rolling with the punches, one can minister to the needs -- to the extent that an urban Church may thrive.
