Wife E experienced her first "European" Christmas last night -- on Christmas eve -- when we met with my aged mother for a family celebration. E called home afterwards to report that we had all exchanged gifts. A lively discussion ensued, as to how that might fit with Xhosa culture: "In our culture? Are you crazy? Do you know what that would unleash?" I explained that we give gifts because God gave us His Son. OBSERVATION: That last part, that God gave us His Son, is well known to them, of course -- several people in E's family are pastors.
