A Minister's Leave

There is more than one purpose to a minister's leave. Apart from being a time of relaxation, it is a time for spiritual refreshment, a time for recouping one's energies, a time to gain new perspective, a time to (idly) prepare for ministry that lies ahead. It usually is a time for study. It is a time for renewing contacts -- and these serve to support ministry. Sometimes it may be a time for alternative forms of ministry. All these things are important -- in fact, important to ministry. OBSERVATION: Some Churches fail to understand how energy-intensive ministry is. It is extremely energy-intensive -- to the extent that dropout from ministry over a lifetime is extremely high (I have seen no figure lower than 80%, and I studied it for Master's degree). For this reason alone, a minister's leave is crucial. I believe, too, that one must accommodate ministers' individual temperaments. They need what they need, in order to minister effectively. That is the goal. It is not all clockwork. The same applies to Church staff. This is how it was in the past.
