Someone said to me: "One can't expect of voluntary workers in the Church what one expects of professionals." A Church relies very much on volunteers, and they do so much, with such devotion. However, even voluntary work belongs to God. I believe this requires excellence -- not some secondary standard. That is to misunderstand voluntarism in the Church. OBSERVATION: In the Congregational Church, ministry itself is voluntary work, as the stipend sets a minister free from employment. Therefore one typically does not speak of volunteers vs. professionals. Ministers in general, I think, are among the finest voluntary workers, and they generally work a lot of overtime, while turning down overtime pay -- which various statistics show.
