An island that I knew as a boy -- a very remote island in the Central Pacific, Banaba -- was known for periodic droughts. When this happened, people died of thirst. Sir Arthur Grimble described a tragic drought in one of his books. Recently, Banaba suffered another drought, and two desalinators broke down. 300 families were without fresh water, and the situation was dire. An emergency mission arrived at the island today, to deliver fresh water (pictured).
